Every winter, the iconic monarch butterflies make their way to Mexico. On their long journey, Georgia provides a crucial resting spot. Recognizing the importance of this, a passionate group of residents from Cresswind Georgia at Twin Lakes came together to form the Monarch Butterfly Conservation Group, with a primary goal of nurturing and protecting these delicate creatures.

Paul Beggs, the enthusiastic chair of the group, shared, “Our efforts are not just about preserving nature. Through this club, we also build meaningful relationships and foster a spirit of community and cooperation.”

To create a sanctuary for the butterflies, the group has spearheaded various initiatives. This includes planting specific flora, such as wild asters, goldenrod, and milkweed, essential for the monarch’s survival and propagation. Monarchs are a regular sight in Georgia’s open habitats during the spring and summer. However, by fall, they embark on their impressive migration to the Mexican mountains. Notably, the monarch butterfly received an endangered status in 2020, which has heightened conservation efforts set to expand in 2024.

Chelsea Smith, Cresswind’s Lifestyle Director, highlighted, “The Monarch Butterfly Conservation Group is just one jewel in our crown of diverse clubs at Cresswind Georgia. Our residents come together, forming groups based on mutual interests, creating a vibrant and dynamic community life.”

In addition to the Monarch initiative, Cresswind boasts of an array of resident-led clubs catering to various interests – be it the Veterans Club for our heroes, the Crafting Club for the artistic souls, the adventurous Travel Club, or the energetic Pickleball Club.
